'The Child vaping crisis 'From what my daughter says, 90% of her year do it'

by Emine Saner

'Young people are getting mixed messages, says Mira Osinibi, a paediatric respiratory specialist nurse who also runs a company, MiraOLungHealth, that goes into schools to talk about vaping. 'They hear it's 95% safer (than smoking tobacco)' says Osinibi, but she questions whether this is accurate for young people. 'We know that children's lungs are not the same as adult's lungs. There has to be more research about how damaging it is. But we already know that nicotine is not good for the adolescent brain'. She also thinks the official data on the number of young vapers is lower than reality. She finds that most young people don't understand the level of nicotine (not all vapes contain it), or the potential effect of vaping on their lungs. 'They're getting mixed messages when they go to a shop and the vape looks like a chocolate bar. It's colourful and small.' vapes are not sold behind a counter, in plain packaging, like cigarettes are.' So they are confused. They go: Whats the big deal?'.......

Smoking:

Smoking behaviour gives a positive reinforcement to the brain and the consequence is an addiction. Nicotine is a powerful reinforcer because of its physiological effect of dopamine reward system. Both addiction to the nicotine and the habit of smoking in certain situations leads to addiction that all smokers need help with. There is no shame in trying several times with quitting as it is often not a sprint but with the right tools it is indeed a marathon.

Vaping:

Vaping is considered as safer than smoking but it is not safe. It is probably a useful tool for some smokers that are trying to quit. E-cigarettes do not produce tar and carbon monoxide that is a major toxin the body of a smoker.
However, vaping is not completely safe and recent studies show that prolonged use of e-cigarettes in adults and young adolescents can cause a hyper airway responsiveness caused by added flavours and a high concentration of the e- cigarette salt base nicotine may cause cardiovascular changes, increased heart rate and later blood pressure due to arterial stiffness.

Vaping in adolescents have a very undesirable effects despite being safer than smoking as high nicotine concentration causes addiction that adolescents are sensitive to due to their evolving neurodevelopmental pathways.
